As a designer, sustainability is a core value of mine. House of Gharat’s commitment to cruelty-free luxury is rare in the industry today, and is not only attractive, but necessary. The fashion industry has a duty to its consumers, workers, and environment to prioritize people and planet over profit, and to outfit everyone in fabrics free from violence and suffering.

This is especially inspiring since the company is so deeply rooted in its Indian heritage. India too often bears the brunt of the violence caused by fashion, so for House of Gharats to represent it in a vibrant, ethical way helps leave a more encouraging legacy. By doing so, we can begin to think of India as it actually is, rather than how it is so recurrently portrayed. As a Polish woman who has lost much of her culture to hardship and time, House of Gharats working so hard to emulate the beauty and richness of their roots truly speaks to me. If we do not have history, we have nothing.

My final connection to the company is the sense of community created within the pages of this website. Being able to read through the blog on topics ranging from sustainability to fashion advice, as well as see others’ comments about what personally resonates with them is a special experience no other luxury brands provide. Fashion is deeply personal, and to hear the stories and perspectives of so many other designers develops a sense of humanity lacked by the industry today. Stories are woven into the very fabric of our clothing, and it’s so lovely to see the way the people hear have read them.

House of Gharats delivers the importance of fashion and culture together. I admire how much originality and patterns has translated through the authentic scarves. The cultural influences, historic, seems like it has been passed down in so many family generations. This is what I love about culture is that you learn and understand! Even if it’s not your culture or it is, there will always be a true definition behind it.

I really love how House Gharats pays attention to details and the creation when it comes to designing their products. Especially when House of Gharats illustrate a meaningful narrative storyline on each scarf. It is more than promoting or selling the products, if I were wearing one of the scarves respectfully, the story from the silk scarf will instil me.

Lastly, what has touched me about House of Gharats is that the focus and prioritizes sustainability for the future for fashion. Allowing to define and label their own creativity in their brand.

-The future of fashion is sustainability and originality.
-The future of retail is digitalization and connection, because customers will not leave the store connected to the brand, the clothes they wear and feeling valued.
-Style from my point of view means the expression of your inner self, finding the voice and confident to wear you.

First of all, what I like about Neishaa Gharat’s designs that each one of them is telling a story that shows a strong connection and appreciation for Indian culture and heritage which makes them very original and unique. What encourages me the most is that the designs clearly communicate important values and support cultural diversity, fair working conditions and ethical productions.

Furthermore, I think that engaging with customers through events such as „Million wishes for the Ocean” show that the brand is responding to current climate conditions and wants to share this mission with its community. Moreover, I believe that the specific description of the inspiration, meaning, use, function and origin of each product on the website reflects brand’s vision and transparent production and adds to the value of the products and made it more durable. As a design student, I always ensure that my manifesto is well communicated and that designs meet the needs of my potential clients and that they are designed to last and serve the environmental change.

Finally, the fact that the designs are rich in could and patterns make it easy to style with basic pieces and can be worn every day in many ways. I like that the brand is offering scarves in different sizes and uses the website to guide on how to wear them („50 ways how to tie a scarf” post).

Three points of the website that speak to me:

    – There is a level of intimacy and comfort given to the customers as there is a whole section of knowing Neishaa Gharat and her story.

    – How in detail we are told the ethos of the company explaining what it stands for like empowering women and girls, abolishing poverty and the preservation of the world through sustainability.

    – The use of the graphics is very powerful, it clearly explains the message that they are carrying.

What attracts me to House of Gharats is that its not trend focused, instead in focuses on originality creating imaginative and vibrant prints that have a story. There is also the importance and emphasise on using quality materials while also being considerate of sustainability and environmental impacts to ensure that products are ethically made. Finally the attention detail and craftmanship for each product being sold . The future of fashion I believe is a balance of creating beauty and designing consciously, ensuring that production process in though with environmental and social issues in mind while still using creativity to make something beautiful and one of a kind.

One of the reasons I was so intrigued to be apart of House of Gharats is first, the usage of being inspired by your culture and transforming into something so elegant and unique. The second reason is the brand’s mantra “As Sustainable As Possible, As Soon As Possible” this is something that is going to be the future, as fashion is one of the most wasteful industries and many brands need to find alternative ways. I love the way your brand is using alternative ways to make sustainable fabrics and also adding beautiful designs of the sea. Lastly, I feel that this brand will give me a really good insight into the fashion/accessories sector and is something I haven’t experienced before and the talent of this brand will make me a better designer but you will also have fresh new eyes to improve this amazing brand.

RE: 1 of 2 response. Name: Sadia T Sultana.

    1. The future of fashion is rewired to conform and embrace all diversities from cultural to gender stereotypes. Initially to appreciate differences and make it the new norm. A key example of this is, Gender-fluidity which is becoming more mainstream in both Fashion Retail and Beauty. This indicates the future direction we are heading towards.

    2. The future of retail is a modernised experience. An integration of new technology for a more seamless digitalized lifestyle. Being more socially and ethically aware; Retailers will be making sustainable changes which make consumers feel more emotionally involved to the experience, products and services. Taking more of a storyteller approach as well as being aesthetically pleasing. Initially developing an advanced personalized retail experience.

    3. Style from my point of view means individuality. It is a form of language that communicates someone’s identity, culture, story and one’s true self. An expression, embracing someone’s uniqueness and individuality. A summary of a person’s personality.

    1. The customer-oriented approach

The website is an experience, inviting the customer to not only observe the brand but become immersed in its values and perspectives. This is done through House of Gharat’s transparency on its blog, collection pages, and ethos. The customer gets an intimate insight into the creative process behind each design, and the research that guided each collection. Additionally, HOG is transparent in its stance on fast-fashion, through its textile process (Seacell textiles) and opening discussions on sustainable fashion in contemporary culture. Many brands keep their process, inspiration, and road to sustainability behind closed doors. House of Gharats gives the viewer an inside look, creating not only an immersive experience but a consumer-centric approach to retail and textiles.

    2. The concoction of modernity and tradition

‘Gharats’ translates to ‘concoction’, a perfect summary of the brand identity, textile designs, and experience. This can be seen in the textile collections which merge traditional techniques with modern sustainable materials, but British tailoring, Italian craftsmanship, and Indian artisanship. By marrying a variety of cultures and techniques, HOG creates a cultural synergy and their own distinct personal style, while paying homage to the cultures and styles that came before. As a designer who identifies with multiple cultures, I am also heavily drawn to hybridization and juxtaposition in my own work. In my wallpaper collection, Yesterday and Tomorrow, I merged revived Victorian styles with obsolete technologies to create a visual style for nostalgia.

    3. The process – led by storytelling and craftsmanship

The design approach of HOG really stood out to me, as textiles were seen as a vessel for storytelling, rather than as a one-dimensional aesthetic. This storytelling is carried through from the design to the craftsmanship, allowing both the design and material to contribute to the concept. This is most apparent in the Blue Fashion Scarf Collection, which not only brings awareness to the impact of climate change on the ocean through its designs but the material itself, using Seacell a textile fiber made from seaweed.

    1. Firstly, the rich representation of Indian culture through the beautiful prints on the scarf means a lot to someone from India.
    2. The pieces are very versatile and ageless which makes them very different from something which only lasts till trend season.
    3. Love how the brand focuses on sustainability so much, the feeling of protecting mother nature will be passed on to the consumer with every item they buy.

The choice of animals for House of Gharats Scarf: Tyger Burning Bright Silk, for me, brings attention to the endangerment of Tigers. This is important as I am conscious about  the animal kingdom where there are estimated only 3,500 tigers remaining in the wild worldwide. The scarf is beautifully illustrated and I hope that other people recognise the current issues surrounding the animal kingdom in the present day. I also appreciate the use of Seacell™ for the House of Gharats Sea to Skin collection as I believe sustainable luxury is an important and growing trend in the fashion industry. The use of a material which contains seaweed is innovative and is beautifully reflected in the colourful scarf designs. Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the House of Gharats blog from 15th Oct 2019 ‘We are experiencing a sea change in material culture. Can our fashion & lifestyle choices save the oceans?’ I think it’s important to reflect on the negative impact fashion has on the environment and how both fashion companies and consumers can help improve this.
