An Artful Life

House Of Gharats is a design house creating conscious luxury for artful dressing and living. The old and new play off one another in perfect harmony. There is an undeniable appreciation for tradition and the antiquated, but also so much creative progression – and a love for beauty.

Founders

Neishaa & Pretam Gharat, founders of House of Gharats, endeavour to bring together various cultures, redefine cultural relationships, and create new style synergies through art and fashion. Living amidst London’s international hybrid city of cultures and its influential past results in objects that are profoundly modern, distinctively stylish, yet inherently classic.

Culture Of Craft

We are passionate about heritage arts and crafts, engaging with the makers and the process. Therefore our designs draw on the essence of tradition, cultural juxtapositions, stories, materials and function. In addition, heritage crafts, unconventional materials, sculptural tailoring, bold colours, fanciful details and artful prints speak our story. Our commitment is to make responsibly through sustainable practices.

Loved and Enduring

The objects that we choose to surround ourselves with, tend to be those with the strongest and deepest connections to our past, present, and future. In addition, they may embody fond memories or represent special people, but cherished things also reveal what we value—beauty, utility, knowledge, craft—and when assembled can function as a portrait in time.

Design

Design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives.
It is a superpower and with it, we can change the world.
Therefore, we believe that social and environmental issues go hand in hand and through exploring the connection between these issues we may find innovative design solutions to sustainability.

-The collaboration with the fashion council is something which caught my eye due to promoting values I consider extremely important like sustainability.
    – The colours used in the layout reflects the designs on the scarfs, so the customer can immediately identify the House of Gharats style.
    – I loved the quote, “Change the world one scarf at the time” as I feel this demonstrates the importance as well as where the company sees itself in a sustainable future.

There are a lot of things about the House of Gharats that mean something to me.

The first thing is that I share the same native country as the brand’s founders so I can relate to the culture behind the breathtaking designs. It is something that definitely means a lot to me as I love seeing influences from my culture in luxury fashion and it is something I am very proud of. Neishaa mentions that it is influenced by tradition, something that is embedded within me and I am a huge fan of it.

Second, I am a huge advocate for art and fashion, and it is evident that in the photography displayed on the website, that the House of Gharats did very well on fusing the two. Creativity tells a story, and I can definitely see a journey when I look at the HOG website.

Lastly, I am very passionate about sustainability in fashion and truly believe that it will drive significant traffic to the website. It is something that a lot of fashion lovers nowadays look out for, and I think it is important to embed this into every aspect.

In a world of fast fashion, I think it’s important to stay true to traditional craftsmanship which has been at the heart of India for over 2,000 years – history is also something I’m passionate about. I’m confident that this will reflect in my work should I be successful in this role.

What dazzle me the most of House of Gharats’s website is:
    – the way in which every prints and even every garments seem to be incorruptible and eternal, that is one big contradiction in Fashion. But while it is necessary to renew, it is also fundamental that, in the end, you have built monumental images which reflect your identity
    – the strong connection that the brand built between fashion and art
    – the eccentricity, the colourful, bright and vibrant atmosphere, the refined elegance, they remind me of a multicultural and poetic dandyism

I would like to point out 3 things of your website:
    – How House of Gharats is taking care of methods of production. I.e: House of Gharats and Commonwealth Fashion Council collaborated to produce a design to highlight oceans pollution. Besides the nice and stunning designs, fabric is as well really important to this project and some part is made from Seacell (seaweed fibers). So when you are wearing a scarf of this project you are wearing a small part of the ocean, too. Amazing.
    – House of Gharats goes beyond retailing. HoG itself is a project that connects ethnic traditions and fashion to the present world. On the collective section you can see many interesting projects such as almost extinguished Balaposh production, or how the Sari is being reinterpreted at Exiles:Making Home x Textile Installation. The Sari, a biographical and cultural item for the artist becomes an object that helps to depict a concrete period of the British History.
-The distinguished designs that are full of vivid and colorful details. In each design you can find a message and feel that it has been created as a unique piece of art. Produced in a slow paced atmosphere to last for long time and be passed down through generations.

The future of fashion is fast forward thinking and optimistic.

“ The future of retail is…”
Bright with changes happening we are forced to take different approaches in design and style in order to adapt to change.

Style from my point of view means freedom to express who you are and what you may stand for and i believe that everyone should be able to express that.

I value House of Gharats for its attitude.

First I appreciate your vision of Fashion as “one of the most important mediums to express one’s individuality”. Fashion is a language, is a way of self-expression. As Art itself, it can be a beautiful way to give value to the human being. Your bold and eclectic designs, bringing together art and fashion, encourage people to be daring, to be fearless and to find their own voice.

Secondly I admire your commitment to work “with crafts that are living traditions.” Bringing “the focus back to the makers and the skills.” It’s this passion of keeping tradition alive that can make fashion responsible and sustainable and that gives every piece a timeless sense of style.

Finally I value the importance of merging this tradition with modernity: only the enconter of this opposites can challenge the conventional ideas of style and lead the way to a new conception of fashion.

The first thing that called my attention was the importance that the brand gives to craft and culture. I think that as artists and designers, we have the responsibility to take the best from our traditions and show it to the world. This is why people who care to engage with crafts are the bridge between art and culture.

Secondly, I think that House of Gharats is a brand that pushes boundaries of commercial fashion. The way that art is mixed with design creates an exquisite and outstanding product.

The third thing that means something to me is how the brand is based on a slow fashion business model, which I think is a way to give more value to the design and the people behind it, and at the same time is a way to protect the environment. Our generation has the responsibility to fight fast fashion and the way it turns our work into something disposable.

The future of fashion is that sustainable and ethical fashion will become the norm and a requirement for fashion companies to align to. Fuelled by education encouraging mass-backing for change, with consumers wanting fashion that represents more than an aesthetic means of self-expression. We will consume with sentimental and long-lasting value in mind, rather than a short-term aim to fulfil a want rather than a need. Fashion will therefore become more widely and deeply considered.

The future of retail will be mainly online and digitalised, therefore meaning that stores will offer a more innovative and exciting experience to encourage the consumer to enter the store. Retailers will provide an experience with the aid of technology, influenced by trends to satisfy our modern need to capture and document every moment. Retailers will also focus on creating convenience, by further developing technology meaning you can digitally try clothes on.

Embracing that the colours, fabric, and fashion that brings you joy and confidence is style, regardless of societal pressures to conform to a certain aesthetic. Style is deeply personal, timeless, and does not align with fast-fashion trends. Style is an extension of your identity and should be celebrated and loved not only by yourself, but by the people around you.

First, I felt particularly touched the values spread on House of Gharat’s website. The commitment regarding the environment and the ethic toward all the person that are part of your company. The way you privilege quality over quantity through sustainable products.

Then, another element that particularly raised my attention is the multicultural aspect of your company. The fact that House of Gharats is a the same time linked with their traditions, but also connected with the contemporary world.

Finally the ultimate element that I have found very interesting despite of the fluidity of your web-based interface, is the fact that contrary to the other luxury brands your website has a very significant historical content about your company but especially on the item you’re selling. An aspect that most of the time luxury companies do not mentioned through their brands.

The future of fashion is innovation , more technological and sustainable.

The future of retail is continuing to sell garments that we can physically touch and try on in store. It helps create a better experience for those who like to understand and feel the clothing before they purchase it. Its about the relationship between the company and the customer.

Style from my point of view means wearing clothes and accessories that reflect who you are as a person and how you want people to be perceived. It helps create a persona, where people can show the world who they are, not through words, but through how they dress. It says a lot about ones personality and character.
