Gajraj collection captures the integral role elephants had in royal life from hunting to transportation for the nobility; they would also ride the magnificent animals into war. Whilst the wisdom of the elephant is widely respected, so is the supreme air and command they hold of any space they enter. The elephants are considered a symbol of good luck.

The collection is steeped with jewel-toned colours we connect with regal heritage. The omnipresence of the elephants & rolling paisley patterns are backed onto deep purples, crimson reds and shimmering powder blues bordered with decorative motifs. Just as the Rajasthani paintings are encased in a duality of decoration and spirituality, so do our scarf designs.

“Flowers were never merely flowers nor clouds clouds,” wrote W.G. Archer, the colonial administrator turned pioneering Rajput art historian. Instead “the mingling of clouds, rain and lightening symbolized the embraces of lovers.”

Rajasthani painting is a style of miniature painting developed mainly in the independent Hindu state of Rājasthān in western India in the 16th–19th century. It evolved from Western Indian manuscript illustrations, though Mughal influence became evident in the later years of its development. Rājasthānī painting is characterised from its bolder use of colour, an abstract and conventionalized conception of the human figure, and an ornamental treatment of landscape. Traditionally, the paintings are aristocratic, individualistic and strong in portraiture, where the plush court scenes and hunting expedition of royalty are depicted. Flowers and animals are also the recurrent images in the paintings. These paintings were meant to be kept in boxes or albums and to be viewed by passing from hand to hand.

The Pichwai paintings originate from the town of Nathdwara, Rajasthan in India. The paintings are devoted to the tales of Lord Krishna. Pichwai paintings originally hung in temples. Artistic reproductions of these paintings allowed devotees and connoisseurs to take the art of the temple and tales of the deity home.

Song Of The Flute is an exquisitely illustrated scarf collection made in Italy, inspired by the Indian Pichwai paintings devoted to Lord Krishna. Raas leela, The Dance Of Divine Love is a kaleidoscopic vision of dancing gopis surrounded by blossoming lotus flowers, singing birds and dancing peacocks. Gopi is a word of Sanskrit origin meaning ‘cow-herd girls’, lovers of Krishna with whom Lord Krishna dances at the time of the autumn moon. It is believed that gopis would be called to dance by the melody of Lord Krishna’s flute, on a single night where the deity would stretch time to last thousands of years. His flute beckons all. Together they would dance & bathe in divine love.

The peacock feathers represent divine love that enters the human heart and fills one`s entire being in ecstasy. It also reminds us of the romantic love shared between Krishna and his beloved Radha. It is said Lord Krishna cleanses the holy feet of Radha with Peacock feathers, during their playtimes in Vrindavan.

Kalighat paintings originated in the 19th century Bengal, in the vicinity of Kali Temple in Kalighat, Kolkata, India. Calcutta was the capital of British India from 1833-1912. By the 1830s, artists had arrived in Calcutta from rural villages in Bengal and began to produce paintings that reflected the local history, mythology, customs and conflicts of a colonised society. As a popular art form, these artists are recognised for their use of brilliant colour, simplified images and swift brushstrokes that became the hallmark of Kalighat painting in the 19th and early 20th century. They became very popular and were carried back as mementoes to Britain, Russia, Czechoslovakia, France, and the United States.

Many world-renowned, modern Indian artists like Jamini Roy’s inventive style was derived from the Kalighat paintings consisting of lively, bold and sweeping brush strokes in spite of being trained in classical European painting style. English scholars and cultural figureheads in India including Sir Monier Monier-Williams and Lockwood Kipling amassed vast personal collections, which are now housed in the Bodleian Library and Victoria and Albert Museum respectively.

Kalighat paintings have participated in the emergence of Bengali identity in the colonial capital in the face of the increasing Europeanization of the city’s intellectual and cultural life. During this period, the British were altering their position from merchants vulnerable to the grace and protection of Indian sovereigns to monarchs of the territory. Anthropologist Milton Singer’s term “cosmopolitan folk culture” aptly describes these paintings.

The Peacock feathers represent a divine love that enters the human heart and fills one`s entire being in ecstasy.
