House of Gharats unveil’s Vineet Vohra’s artful journey and photographical adventures through this collection.

“Since 2001 street photography has been my passion and my first nature. To me, street photography is a journey. I travel every day, I am learning and unlearning everyday, I thrive to improve everyday, and I try to be as honest through my lens as I can. I try to synthesize between human elements and the environment and my main focus is on how to make ordinary moments look extraordinary.“ Vineet is currently doing workshops globally and has been chosen as a Leica Ambassador. His works and stories have been published in prestigious magazines all over the world. He currently resides in India.

There are almost 100 ghats (places with steps leading down to the water) along the Ganges River in Varanasi. The main group contains around 25 of them, and it extends from Assi Ghat north to Raj Ghat. The ghats are primarily used for bathing and puja rituals (worship), but there are two (Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats) where cremations are solely performed. Many of the ghats were constructed when Varanasi was substantially rebuilt under the Maratha Empire in the 1700s. They are either privately owned or have special significance in Hindu mythology. The ghats are especially dramatic at sunset. Come dusk, visitors can buy blossoms to add to the sea of lotus-shaped candles floating downstream during ganga aarti, a glowing tribute to the Ganges.

This collection is a curated selection of images reflecting different facets of Benares- the temples where the deities rest, the ghats (banks) where humans seem to witness the conduit between the heaven and the Ganges, street life and the Sadhus (ascetics) who are the celibate supreme.
